Our Story

Five years of craft, community, and coffee that we're genuinely proud of

Haven Cafe interior — warm wooden bar and exposed brick

A dream, a corner, and a thousand cups later

Haven Cafe was born in 2019 from a simple belief: Portland deserved a neighborhood cafe that felt genuinely welcoming. Not trendy for the sake of it, not precious about its rituals — just a warm, honest place where great coffee and great company could coexist.

Founder Sarah Lin poured her savings and five years of barista experience into a 900 sq ft space on Oak Street. The bar was rough-hewn reclaimed wood, the espresso machine secondhand, and the seating mismatched on purpose. It felt like someone's home — because it was meant to.

Word spread quickly. Within six months we were roasting our own beans. Within a year we'd hired a dedicated pastry team. What hasn't changed is the reason we open the doors every morning: to make someone's day a little better, one cup at a time.

Our values

These aren't words on a wall — they're the decisions we make before 5am every morning

Sustainability First

We source exclusively from farms with fair trade certification and direct-trade relationships. Our packaging is compostable. Our waste goes to local compost programs.

Craft Without Compromise

We roast daily in small batches. We dial in our espresso every morning. We bake from scratch, never from frozen. Quality is non-negotiable, even on a Tuesday.

Community Over Everything

We host local art shows, neighborhood meetups, and open-mic nights. We pay above minimum wage. We partner with Portland food banks each holiday season.

Genuine Hospitality

We learn regulars' names. We remember your order. We mean it when we ask how your day is. Hospitality here isn't a script — it's just who we are.

How we roast

Every bag you open started months ago as a relationship with a farmer

01

Source Direct

We visit farms in Colombia, Ethiopia, and Guatemala annually to taste and negotiate harvest contracts directly — no middlemen, just handshakes.

02

Ship Green

Green (unroasted) beans arrive in GrainPro bags to preserve moisture, typically within two months of harvest — fresher than any supermarket shelf.

03

Roast Small

Our 5kg drum roaster runs once a day. Small batches mean every profile is dialed in fresh, and beans never sit for more than a week before they reach you.

04

Brew & Serve

From our La Marzocco to your hands in under a minute. Every shot is pulled fresh — no batch brew sitting on a burner, no flavor left behind.

Meet the team

Every great cup starts with a great person behind the bar

Sarah Lin - Founder

Head Barista

Marcus came to us from Melbourne's specialty coffee scene and brought his obsession with extraction science with him. His latte art makes people take photos before they drink.

Priya Nair - Head Baker

Priya Nair

Priya trained at a patisserie in Lyon and returned to Portland to bake the croissants she always wanted. She arrives at 4am and considers it the best part of her day.
